This piece was first shaped on a lathe and then carved with a wood chisel. The carving creates a contrast between sharp, clean edges and the more primitive marks left by the tool. The interior is protected with multiple layers of lacquer, while the exterior employs the Fuki-urushi technique to preserve the wood’s grain and waterproof qualities. It can be used as a container for sake or tea.
