Hira Kanna planer – unique piece
240€
In stock
An exceptional, vintage, and brand-new plane, offered in its original box. Forged by Soden, a craftsman who has since passed away, it bears the inscription Sandaime which means third generation and the nomination Miya which refers to planes made for temple carpentry. A rare piece.
The 70mm iron is made of hand-forged, double-layered carbon steel, enriched with a special alloy unique to the blacksmith. The hammered pattern and signature are magnificent. The very thick, laminated counter-iron is also of very high quality.
The Dai, the block of Japanese red oak, is solid, heavy, and perfectly stable. The base is straight, and the oak grain is very consistent. The Dai is equipped with a TsutsumiA slight machining process refines the mouth opening, and two ebony keys are included: one reinforcing the contact area in front of the mouth, and the other inlaid in the sole. The counter-iron support bar is square, a characteristic detail of the Showa period, now rare.
Unlike European planes, the Kanna is pulled rather than pushed. An initial adjustment of the sole will be necessary before use. This tool is for the experienced user, or for those looking to take their skills to the next level.
