Three authors inaugurate this first edition of Cahiers de l'Ibois, the biannual editorial initiative stemming from the EPFL laboratory dedicated to innovative wooden construction: Françoise Fromonot looks back on the heroic epic of Jørn Utzon and what he unsuccessfully attempted to achieve when the Sydney Opera House was built. Stéphane Berthier offers a fairly comprehensive overview of the place of Ibois in the constellation of laboratories that develop computer-aided design and manufacturing techniques. As for Yann Rocher, he strives to establish the many constructive and symbolic links between the material used to build the wooden Pavilion of the Théâtre de Vidy and its function as a stage location.
