Hervé Baley

An idealistic architect, Hervé Baley (1933-2010) always advocated the poetry of space and went against the French trend of the post-war period that favored modernism and its rationalist rigor. His discovery of Frank Lloyd Wright, during his years of study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the 1950s, marked a turning point in his creative journey. This catalog of the first exhibition devoted to Baley's work includes some fifty pieces, created between the 1960s and 1990s, in France and Morocco. Mainly in wood, with dynamic constructions, low lines and a rejection of right angles, the works included in this book demonstrate the architecture and lifestyle that Baley sought to promote. Created specifically for different projects, from his own house-studio in the 1960s to the Cansado de Miferma project in Mauritania (c. 1960) or a large private property in the 1990s, these works embody the architect's entire oeuvre: impractical, contrasting, subtle and always in keeping with the environment for which they were created.
