Heartwood is the inner part of the wood, its steel-hard core corresponds to the oldest growth zones formed by the tree. It is this dark material that persisted in the logs of European walnut that Jules Lobgeois stored at the back of his workshop. To pay homage to this tree, he followed as faithfully as possible the curves that the heartwood imposed on his tools. A chiseled piece of stainless steel finishes the piece on the surface. Can be displayed as a sculpture or used as a side table. Unique piece designed for the OROS Market, from its Duramen series produced for the Biennale Émergence 2020. Can be sold with the 2 other pieces visible in the photos.

“The three pieces designed for OROS were made from the largest branches of an old walnut tree that stood behind my studio. When it was cut two years ago I kept some parts still usable as a souvenir. By debarking them and removing the sapwood I began to expose the heartwood. This is the inner part of the wood, its heart hard as steel corresponds to the oldest growth zones formed by the tree. I sculpted the wood, letting my tools go with the hardness of the wood and my imagination. These pieces which I then protected with beeswax and a steel plate somehow represent the visual soul of the tree.” Jules Lobgeois
