Gestures and Tools Summer 2026 Selection
Our selections usually focus on wooden objects. Those we use for their functionality or admire for their beauty. Objects shaped, sanded, assembled, whose appeal lies as much in the material itself as in the craftsmanship that brought them into being. But behind every object, there is a tool. Often invisible, rarely celebrated, and yet the primary intermediary between the hand and the material.
Preparing this selection led me to ask myself a simple question: what makes a good tool? Not necessarily the most sophisticated or the most modern. For this summer selection, I collaborated with Lucas Hoffalt of Outinomi, a French specialist in Japanese tools who meticulously curates tools designed to last, embodying a know-how passed down from generation to generation.
Draw a line before cutting. Saw cleanly, without tearing. Plane until the surface becomes luminous. Chisel a mortise to the millimeter. Sculpt a form, engrave in the material. Strike with precision.
This mapping of the craft guided the selection. Seven pieces, seven exclusive tools, hand-forged and often signed by the artisan who made them. Tools that we choose, that accompany us, and that stand the test of time.
A truly effective tool is one that disappears into the action. One that goes unnoticed because it performs exactly as required.
