Essential Furniture Viewport Studio

The Viewport studio is made up of a multidisciplinary team of architects and designers based in London and Singapore.

Their new line of furniture, called “Essential Furniture”, just won the “Furniture Design of the Year” award at the Dezeen Awards 2020. Made from discarded timber and located within a XNUMX-minute radius miles around the production site, these pieces of furniture require less energy and resources than usual. This approach calls into question the production cycle of industrial furniture.

This line of furniture is made up of low tables and side tables, made from scrap wood that does not conform by shape, size or appearance to the needs of the construction. The precise design of these tables is thus dictated by the shape of the pieces of wood. They are all different, but share the same general appearance.

The wood is first of all dried in the open air to give it stability, then all the elements are cleaned by sandblasting before being assembled according to their structural properties and their shapes. Visible tenon and mortise joints are CNC milled piece by piece. This process reduces the waste of material and gives character to the furniture. The final blackened finish is obtained by applying a natural layer of black wood stain.
