Chatsworth Yew Logs Max lamb
This project was designed as part of Modern Makers, a contemporary craft auction exhibition, orchestrated by curator Sarah Griffin at Chatsworth Castle in the UK, in collaboration with Sothebys and Gallery Fumi.
Max Lamb worked for this exhibition 5 yew logs, coming from the domain of the castle. Each yew log was first turned to remove the outer bark and outer layers of sapwood to the exact point - and deliberately more - to arrive at a perfect cylindrical column. Although all surface irregularities have been removed to obtain a "regularized" wood, the annual growth rings are gradually exposed generating a graphic representation of the wood grain unique to the yew.
This creative process is a rather daring, minimalist and slightly brutal intervention with this natural material, but nature regains control as the log dries and the inherent tensions of wood set in. Each log is a piece of furniture in its own right, but can also be used to support, display, display other objects or sculptures, directly referring to the prolific collecting habits of each Duke and Duchess of the United Kingdom.
WE love
The technical nature of the project, the very raw and worked aspect of the logs.
