Bentwood Savoir-faire

Published 05 / 02 / 2023

Bending is a technique for deforming a piece of wood to give it a curved shape. For solid wood, bending is done using steam in an oven. Thanks to the heat and humidity released, the wood fibers become malleable and are ready to be constrained on a jig. Remaining parallel in their lengths, they do not affect the tensile strength of the wood and will dry in this shape to end up retaining it. It is this technique in particular that was used for the making of the ZARUCOLANDER.

To obtain this curved result, different bending techniques can be used such as glued laminated or notched.
